Meet the 2024-25 Oilers: Coy Pighin

OKOTOKS, AB (September 2, 2024) — The Okotoks Oilers are excited to welcome 2006-born forward Coy Pighin (Alix, AB) to our organization for the 2024-25 season.

Pighin, 18, joins the Oilers after two seasons with the Drumheller Dragons. The 5’11”, 175-pound forward collected 14 goals and 34 points in 46 games with the Dragons in the 2023-24 regular season, adding three goals and eight points in nine playoff contests.

For an Oilers team that plans to deploy a mixture of local and imported talent heading into its first full BCHL season, Pighin falls squarely into the first category. He’s a familiar face who appeared in eight games against the Oilers over the 2022-23 and 2023-24 seasons, collecting three goals and six points.

“I used to live by Nanton, and I kind of knew there’s just kind of a small-town feeling when you play here, so I think it’ll be enjoyable,” Pighin said Monday. “They play fast and physical, it’s kind of similar to [Drumheller]. It’s a little gritty, but there’s some skill in there.”

Pighin joins an Oilers team that acquired another former Alberta rival in Otto Hanson (Calgary, AB) from the Blackfalds Bulldogs last week, as well as former Brooks Bandits forward Ethan DeKay (Mississauga, ON) earlier this summer.

The Oilers’ contingent of Alberta-born players in camp also includes returnees Brett Wilson (Calgary, AB), Jackson Rowland (Calgary, AB), Hunter Sawka (Cochrane, AB), Ryder De Nys (Canmore, AB), Kade Duell (Taber, AB), Brennen Hocher (Calgary, AB), and Allen Sherpa (Calgary, AB), as well as other new players yet to be introduced.

“It’s been awesome, everybody’s treated everybody good,” Pighin said Monday. “There’s nothing negative I could say about it.”

The Oilers are slated to play their first game of the 2024 BCHL preseason on Saturday, September 7, when they take on the Sherwood Park Crusaders at Viking Rentals Centre in Okotoks at 8:05 p.m. MT.
